In this article, we will walk you through a step by step tutorial on how to get the necessry information for accessing Google Cloud Virtual Machine with VPSrobots.
Create a Google Compute Engine VM Instance
Log in Google Cloud Platform with your Gmail account. Now, Google provide users with a free trial, the price of which equals to $300. After logging in, click Menu icon at the top of the left corner to open the navigation menu bar. Click Computer Engine to open the sub-menu and click VM instances option.
After that, you are taken to VM instances page. Click Create button to create an insatnce page.
On the Create an instance page, fill in the desired properties for your instance. Name your creating instance, select Region, Zone and Machine type from the drop-down menu. You can select the Linux distribution by clicking Change button.
Depending on your need, configure Identity and API access, Firewall section. Click and expand Management, Disks, Networking, SSH keys section.
After expanding the section, click Networking option. On Networking section, click the drop-down list under the external IP address option, and select Custom IP address option for reserving a static IP address, which makes Google Cloud Platform reserve the IP address for your project until you decide to release it. If your customer and users access your website with this IP address, I highly recommend you to reserve the IP address so that only your project can use it.
Click Create button to create the new instance. Lastly, you get your IP address which is either a static IP address or ephemeral one.
Generate SSH Key Pairs
Log in VPSrobots client and click Create VPS Node option on the left navigation menu bar. After that, click Google Cloud Computer tab. Using VPSrobots client to access Google Cloud Virtual Machine, besides External IP address, we also need Username and Private Key File. VPSrobots client is inetgrated with PuTTY Key Generator, so you don’t need to download and install it on your computer. Click Open Puttygen option to run PuTTY Key Generator.
After that, click Generate button to generate SSH key pairs on PuTTY Key Generator. It will spend a few seconds. During the SSH Key Paris generation, please move your mouse over the blank area on the Generator for generating some randomness. The Key comment is your Username and you can custom it freely. The public key is generated and will be located on the top of the Generator. Regarding the Private Key, you have to export it from the Generator. So click Conversation option on the top to open the drop-down menu and select Export OpenSSH Key option to export the Private Key file to your computer.
Connect to Google Cloud Virtual Machine with SSH Key Pairs
After exporting the Private Key, we have to go back to Google Cloud console. Click Computer Engine option to open the sub-menu and click Metadata option. On Metadata page, click SSH Keys option and copy the Public Key from the PuTTY Key Generator and paste it on the Metadata page and click Save button. Now, we have done everything for accessing Google Cloud Virtual Machine with VPSrobots.
So far, we got the three needed information for accessing Google Cloud Virtual Machine with VPSrobots:
- The external IP address: e.g. 188.8.131.52
- Username: example
- Private Key file
